I collect things: little mantras, questions, a sentence that catches me off guard. A phrase arrives while I’m on the subway or doing something ordinary, and I grab my phone before it disappears. Later, I go back. Sometimes there’s something there. Sometimes there isn’t. The pieces that stay become these brief responses to everyday becoming.
When I studied creative nonfiction as an undergraduate, I fell in love with all the shapes a story could take. I’m a big fan of Susan Sontag’s Notes on “Camp”, with its numbered observations, and of aphorisms: those small thoughts that can open a door without turning into an essay.
Notes On is my creative writing corner. I can follow a question, try out a metaphor, or sit with a line I wrote on my phone weeks ago and finally see what it was trying to tell me.
